A new generation for mechanical engineering

In practical terms, the academy gives elementary school children the opportunity to deepen their own interests in mathematics, computer science, natural sciences and technology at an early stage. Walter Maschinenbau GmbH is a cooperation partner in the field of technology.

In total, eight children from different primary schools in Tübingen registered for the course "How do I build a machine?", Which takes place directly at Walter Maschinenbau GmbH in Tübingen.

« Through the partnership, we have the opportunity to inspire a new generation for mechanical engineering and not least for our company. »
Harri Rein, CTO

On four afternoons, the children learn everything about the construction of a tool grinding machine: from the idea, through the actual construction of the machine with its various drive types to the application of the finished machine to the customer. The first station for the students is the construction department. Here, the colleagues had prepared everything to show the kids how to design a machine on the computer using a CAD design program. A small competition in teams of two motivates the young developers: Whoever builds an aircraft landing gear virtually with a 3-D mouse wins.

Four afternoons - Four departments

Equipped with goggles, gloves and safety shoes in miniature format, the group then continues to the service and experiment departments. In the service the children get to know the different materials from which our machines are built. On the third afternoon in the experiment, a prepared kit for an electric motor is ready for each child. First, the group is explained the operation of the electric motor, before they assemble a motor on their own. In the final appointment, the children in the application technology use our grinding software to look closely at the profile tools on the screen before they are ground on the machine. Finally, they even take their own tools home engraved with their name.

« The kids are not the only ones who benefit from the course. Our colleagues, who spend a lot of time in the preparation, learn something new with each course. We have received a lot of feedback and already have some new ideas for the next event. »

What is the Hector Kinderakademie?

Since the school year 2012/13 the Hector Kinderakademie Tübingen offers each school year about 50 courses for gifted and highly talented children. Pupils are thus offered the opportunity to deepen their knowledge during elementary school and to explore their own interests. They should be stimulated to independence, discover learning and strengthen their social skills.

The courses are free so that all children, regardless of their social background, have the opportunity to be encouraged according to their talents. The Academy is supported by the Hector Foundation II and the Baden-Württemberg Ministry of Culture within the framework of gifted education. Courses usually take place outside class on afternoons or Saturdays. The students can choose from a wide range of subjects from the fields of mathematics, computer science, natural sciences and technology.

Some companies in Tübingen, such as Walter Maschinenbau GmbH, support the Hector Kinderakademie as a cooperation partner. They offer individual courses for the children in their own rooms. By practical on-site learning and concrete applications under the guidance of experts, the children can expand, deepen and consolidate their existing knowledge.
